The Ausable Wulff is a classic dry fly developed by Fran Betters on the Ausable River in New York’s Adirondacks. Built for fast, broken water, it combines durability, buoyancy, and visibility—qualities that make it a reliable searching pattern for trout. Its signature rusty-orange body and bushy hackle provide a bold silhouette, while white calf tail wings keep it visible to anglers in heavy currents.

The fly’s hair wings and tail ensure it rides high on the surface, even in turbulent riffles and pocket water. The bright body color imitates a range of insects, from mayflies to terrestrials, and also functions as an attractor pattern when trout are opportunistic.
